Saturday 1st August Charlotte Leadbeater. ‘The Dance – Drawing the figure in movement’ view work at www.kingstreetgallery.co.uk

Charlotte trained at Camberwell school of arts and crafts and her work can be seen at King Street Gallery, Carmarthen. In 1999 while artist in residence at Swansea Grand Theatre, she set up and managed the Swansea Ballet Russe and her own painting work centred around the subject of the Dancer. She evolved her own ways of depicting the essential energy of the moving figure using pencils, felt tipped pens, watercolour and ink, and torn tissue paper and paint. This workshop is a rare opportunity to explore ways of drawing the dancer and offering the chance to explore a longer pose of the dancer at rest, tying ribbons, in the afternoon. There will be a model fee of £6

Tuesday 4th. Glenn Ibbitson . ‘Portrait Painting’ (in main hall) view work at www.glennart.co.uk

A lightning paced foundation in portrait painting, using a limited palette of  either/and/or acrylic and oils. This one day introductory course introduces concepts of structure and form built through effects of tone and surface reflected colour. Minimal drawing, maximum paint handling, following a formula of Portrait equals Observation plus Manual Dexterity divided by Artistic Expression!

Thursday 5th August. Charlotte Leadbeater. ‘Introduction to Oil painting using Still Life Objects.’

Charlotte will demonstrate how to approach an oil painting, using charcoal and a limited colour palette in the morning and adding colour in the later stages of the painting during the afternoon. There will be some teaching of colour mixing to help with any further painting. Students can choose to work on canvas, board or thick  watercolour paper and will be instructed as to how to prime them.

Saturday 8th August. Peter Brooke. ‘Cubism for the 21st Century. The Teaching of Albert Gleizes.’  View work at www.peterbrooke.org.uk

Cubism at the beginning of the twentieth century marked a definitive break with the perspective system that had underpinned western painting for the previous 500 years. But this posed the question : why did the artists do it? What were the qualities they sensed could be released once the perspective system was suppressed? Peter Brooke has written the authoritative study of Gleizes – ‘Albert Gleizes, For and Against the Twentieth Century’ and published several translations of his writings. In this workshop he offers an illustrated introduction to the Cubist painter, Gleizes’ work, situating it in relation to other Cubist and non-representational painters. He proposes a number of simple ‘exercises’ both in form and in colour by which we can have some idea of how these principles work out in practice.

Wednesday 12th August. Judy Linnell. ‘Free flowing watercolour’

Judy Linnell studied Fine Art at Leeds University and is a highly acclaimed watercolourist exhibiting annually in London with the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour at the Mall Galleries and also with the Royal Watercolour Society. She has contributed to a number of books such as ‘The Encyclopaedia of Watercolour Painting’. Judy loves the vibrancy, luminosity and fluidity of the watercolour medium and likes to exploit its unique qualities to the full, taking risks, experimenting and pushing colour to the limits. Her approach is essentially intuitive and spontaneous, painterly and loose, combining large fluid washes with delicate line work. Subject matter for this workshop will be the wild and atmospheric landscape and coastline of Wales.

Thursday 13th Glenn Ibbitson and Carole King.  ‘Collagraphs;Printmaking for Home and School’ (in main hall)

An exciting, one day workshop exploring simple variations on the technique of collagraphy. Collaged printing blocks can be created from textures (papers, string, fabrics etc) and cut or torn lines. These prepared plates will then be developed and printed. Students will have access to our portable press; however, the methods employed are suitable for hand-printing, enabling students to further develop their skills at home or in the classroom. Materials available at a charge of £2 per head. Tools provided. Suitable for those with little or no previous experience of print–making as well as the more experienced. With 2 tutors this workshop will cater for 14

Please note we use oil–based inks and small quantities of white spirit.

Friday 14th Ainsley Hillard. ‘Tapestry Weaving; Structure and Image.’

Ainsley Hillard studied constructed textiles at Middlesex University and later completed an M.A. in Australia. Her hand-woven structures have won international awards. This class will provide a stimulating environment in which to develop and explore the technique of tapestry weaving. New students will be taught basic tapestry weaving skills, which include warping a frame, manipulating warp threads by hand, laying in chosen yarn, weaving separate areas and shapes and experiencing colour mixing through twisting yarns and hatching. With these skills, students can go on to tackle an image in the colours of their choice.

A £10 materials fee will cover warp, yarn and frame. Please bring a notebook, pencil and scissors.

Saturday 15th Ainsley Hillard. ‘Tapestry Weaving ; Surface and Structure.’

The tapestry weaving class will explore a range of textural techniques such as soumak, tie-on knots, whipping and quick rug pile, incorporating materials such as wool, linen, jute, cotton and metals. These experimental skills can be incorporated in future designs, to develop a base relief quality and create textural weavings that may be manipulated into sculptural forms.

A £10.00 materials fee will cover warp, yarn and frame. Please bring a notebook, pencil and scissors.

Thursday 20th August. Arnold Lowrey. ‘Watercolour’ view work at www.lowrey.co.uk

Arnold is without doubt one of the masters of traditional watercolour and has produced many books and videos on the subject, not to mention his own specially designed palette, all of which will be on sale at the workshop. He is known for his sense of humour and easy going manner and his workshops are remarkable for his large scale, fast and effective demonstrations, of which there will be several on the day. He is one of those painters who ‘makes it look so easy’ and a great exponent of the medium, guaranteed to make you want to do it yourself. You will learn many exciting tips and methods on this day to make quantum leaps in your own watercolour work.

Friday 21st August. Janis Fry. ‘Life drawing. Male and female nudes’

Specialist Art Teacher, Janis Fry was nominated for an ‘Inspired adult tutor and mentor award’ recently. She believes that drawing is the basis of all artwork and that learning to draw through observation of the human figure is an essential part of the process. This workshop is a chance to explore both the male and female nude and is designed to suit all abilities. Instruction will be given as to measuring and depicting the figure and there will be both long and short poses. There will be a model fee of £6 for the day.

Saturday 22nd August. Janis Fry. ‘Tricks, techniques and effects of acrylic painting’ view work at www.artmatters.org.uk

Acrylic paint is a highly effective and easy to use painting medium. Since it has only been available for some 6o years, artists are still discovering what it will do. Some use it like watercolour, others like oil paint but there are actually a wealth of techniques, properties and working methods, specific to acrylic which make it a highly effective and easy to use paint. Once these methods are learnt, acrylic paint will do exactly what you would like it to, leaving you free to concentrate on the process of building up a painting. If you wish, it will also give you the accidentals and random effects that add a little mystery to your work.

Sunday 23rd August. Elizabeth Haines at Bryn Morris Studio, Pembrokeshire. ‘Learning to see afresh – experimental workshop’

www.ElizabethHaines.co.uk

This workshop will take place at Bryn Morris Studio near Maenclochog, Pembrokeshire and students will be given directions as to how to get there. This is an exciting workshop and demonstration, designed to challenge and reanimate ways of using water-based paint media. Working with initial marks with colour, the image is allowed to evolve, disintegrate and re-emerge, rather than have a particular idea imposed from the outset. Through sabotaging our habitual ways of working we allow the unconscious to surprise us. Playing with the medium with no conscious plan in mind is a marvellous way of bringing ideas to the surface through colour, shape and texture and allows us to respond and dialogue with the emerging image. All that we learn by experimenting with paint in this way can be incorporated later into any genre such as landscape or figure painting.
